Today my favorite kids book is The Hotel Balzaar by Kate DiCamillo

Fantastic short story about a hotel maid's daughter, Marta. When a mysterious Countess arrives and takes Marta in, an adventure in seven stories is told that leads to the solution of the mystery of her missing father, lost at war. Like The Puppets of Spellhorst, another timeless, awe-inspiring folk tale from DiCamillo, with incredible art deco line art by Julia Sarda.
